A mostly agricultural and rural area, in recent years Coachella has grown tremendously as the Palm Springs area’s population continues to spread out in an easterly direction. In the 1880’s the indigenous Cahuilla Tribe sold the land that now makes up the city to the Southern Pacific Railroad and progress came calling to this unique desert farming area. Some of the Coachella Valley is still owned by the Cahuilla, who also have cultural museums and resort casinos located locally. Legend has it that the name “Coachella” is a misspelling of the Spanish word “conchilla” which is what the natives called the tiny white snail shells farmers found in the area’s sandy soil.

Coachella became a fully incorporated city in 1946, and during the 1960s gained national fame for its political activism thanks to the presence of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union. Today, the area most commonly known as the Pueblo Viejo or ‘old neighborhood’ is enjoying a renewed transformation as Coachella steps into the spotlight for its historical fame. One of the most picturesque and scenic communities in the Greater Palm Springs area, Coachella is culturally diverse and intriguing.

Coachella is the final resting place of famed director Frank Capra and has also been the location for several films and television shows. One of the most well-known was an episode of California’s Gold in 2001, filmed by Huell Howser Productions. The Coachella of today may be surrounded by the expensive and luxurious celebrity haunts of Palm Springs, La Quinta and Indian Wells but it is still a working-class community and an affordable place to live with a down-to-earth ambiance.
